Over the last 10 years, we've converted an estimated 2 acres of area to fine fescue- areas that are allowed to grow and turn to seedhead. One thing I've learned, is that while the grass seed germinates in about 2 weeks, it can take 2-3 seasons for the fescue to mature to the point of producing a seedhead. In the end, it's worth it because it looks so much nicer and while it's not maintenance free, it does eliminate the weekly weedeating or mowing. This article from Club and Resort Business, offers a nice insight into native areas.
