One starting point for us was looking at the USGA's opinion on the life expectancy of playing surfaces and infrastructure. Last night, I was reading the latest Golf Course Management Magazine and came across this comprehensive article by a well known former superintendent. Terry Buchen, CGCS, MG does a tremendous amount of consulting and due diligence reports for golf facilities.
These types of lists are beneficial but there are so many factors that weigh into these numbers. It's more complicated than simply assigning a range of years to it. Upkeep, preventative maintenance, aerification and topdressing amounts in the case of greens, are all examples that will extend the life of a particular component of a golf course. Again., as a starting point it is good information and very interesting.
