Upcoming Week

The weather the coming week looks great. It will be dry and much warmer. This is good news for the greens to heal from aerification. It is also good news to allow us to get the course ready for the season.

Here are some notes for the coming week and our goals:

1. We will start picking up our mowing programs with the warmer weather. This means 3 days/week at the practice facility and a similar schedule on the golf course. Greens were mowed for the first time today, Friday.

2. On Tuesday, we will get our final load of sod. This will finish the tees (holes 15-18) as well as the drainage on #14.

3. We will be edging all of the sprinkler heads and the granite yardage markers. Catch basins are included as well.

4. We will complete all the push mowing and weed eating on the golf course.

5. We will finish picking up stump grinding material and begin prepping for hydro seeding to be done the following week.

6. By Friday I hope to be close to being finished with mulching and pine straw on the golf course.

7. Parking lot clean up. We will be topdressing more roughs with any leftover sand and hauling other material off site. We have a sweeper attachment for one of our tractors that works great to clean up asphalt surfaces.

Next week will be a great productive week for the staff and the result will be an improved golf course. The one project I am co tinting to consider is the resod ding of tees on 2,3 and 17. These 3 tees have perennial poor turf quality due to excess shade. I plan to resod these again to Zoysiagrass. I jumped the gun last year, resod ding too early. This year, I will wait until May when the zoysia would break dormancy in our climate. This way, it won't be susceptible to any winter kill issues. It's my opinion that the Zoysia I got last year was dead on arrival. Another course in Western NC did a major renovation and struggled with the same sod from the same field. If we harvest the sod when it's actively growing, we will be assured there are no issues.
