Broadleaf weeds are always a challenge in turf. Remember, weeds are anything growing where you don't want them to. Therefore, in a natural setting, many of these weeds are actually wildflowers that can add to a landscape. However, in your lawn, this isn't the case. They are treated with a foliar herbicide- post emergently that kills the weed but unharms the grass. This means there is no pre-emergent chemical that can be put down to deal with grassy weeds like we do with Crabgrass. So, here are the most common broadleaf weeds in our area that we fight on the golf course. I did not include grassy weeds or sedges like yellow nutsedge. That is a story for another day.
Common Chickweed
Early stages of Plantain
Speedwell is the first to appear in early spring. It has tiny white flowers and is very easy to eradicate.
Clover is an easy one. Don't kill any 4 leafs as those are good luck!
Dandelion- everyone knows this one!
Mouse ear chickweed is a tough weed to kill. It often takes multiple applications 7 days apart due to its waxy leaf that often repels herbicide.
Wild violet is the hardest of all broadleaf weeds to control. It can take as many as 4-5 applications.
