Here is a neat photo of an Oregon seed production facility. This is actually Bentgrass that isn't mowed. Turf that isn't mowed, will turn to seed head, much like our native fescue areas. This seed is harvested and then sold in 25lb bags to superintendents. This is a huge industry in Oregon because the weather is perfect for grass growing.
Interesting fact: with the downturn in the economy during the last 8 years, the demand for turf seed is down. This led many growers to give up the turf industry and pick up other crops. Specifically, soybeans can be grown for a much higher price per square foot than grass seed. Believe it or not, the demand for Nutella is huge right now and many farmers are switching to hazelnut growing. One jar of Nutella contains 50 hazelnuts. It is all about how much money per square foot your land can return. Turf isn't producing right now, unfortunately.
