"Dragging Fairways"

In the last few blog posts, I referred to the process of dragging fairways after they are aerated.  To the average golfer, it may sound confusing.  The reason we do it, is to separate the sand and soil from the thatch on the aeration plugs.  The soil is returned back to the empty holes and the light-weight thatch material is blown to the center of the fairway, where it can be picked up.

To "drag" a fairway, we simply use a modified $100 chain-link fence gate, made of galvanized steel that was purchased at Lowes.  By pulling this across the dry aeration plugs, it does a perfect job of breaking up the plugs, which reduces the volume of material that has to be pick up and hauled off the fairway.  I hope this explanation makes a little more sense!
