Turf Nursery

I talked about seeding our green nursery a few weeks ago.  Due to some drainage issues caused by trying to get away without tilling the rootzone, we had a lot of algae growing on the surface, that was preventing seed germination and growth.  Therefore, we changed gears and started over.  The grass that did germinate was killed with an herbicide.

We then tilled the rootzone to mix the new sand that was floated across the surface a month or more ago.  After 2 directions of tilling, we repacked the root zone by watering, rolling, leveling and then repeating the process about 4 times.  What is left is a super level and firm surface.

Since we are so late in the season, we are going to sod 3,500ft2 of creeping bentgrass this Thursday.  This will give us plenty of time to perform numerous aerations throughout the fall to get this turf in great condition and ready to be moved to the golf course, following the work this winter on greens #12 and #14.  Each green is expected to be enlarged by 1,000ft2, so additional turf will be needed.

The rootzone is ideal, in terms of firmness, when you can walk across the sand and not leave the slightest footprint.
