Sod Harvesting

After a full year of establishment, we started removing sod from our Poa annua nursery green at the back of the practice facility.  The 17th green is now 1,000 square feet larger than it was last year.  With the size increase, more greens height maintained turf needed to be added to the expansion.  Rather than purchase sod from a sod farm and slowly work the sod height of cut down over time, we’re opting to use our own turf that will allow the green to be grown-in and ready by the start of the season.  The green is being sodded with PA33, Penn State’s first ever harvested Poa annua seed.  I am so excited to get this on the green and once it is rooted come March or April, to start grooming it.  Seeing it on a nursery is one thing but seeing it on a putting green that’s maintained aggressively on a daily basis is going to be really fascinating to see how it performs.  In the coming days, I’ll have more photos of the green and approach, once they are sodded.
