The curbing stone we are using along the croquet lawns are granite blocks that measure 6" wide by 6" deep and approximately 20" long. We dug a footer that allows approximately 8" of the stone to stick out above ground. This means, 10" to 12" of the stone is buried and held in place by concrete. This will make for a very durable and attractive curb for years to come.
