Annual Soil Testing

Winter is not only a time for projects but also for planning for the upcoming season.  One of the most essential practices we do to get ready for the coming year is soil testing.  Numerous samples from greens, tees, fairways, roughs and the practice tee are sent to Logan labs in Ohio for nutrient analysis.  Soil testing provides valuable insight into the soil composition and nutrient levels of the various root zones below the turf.  It determines the soil pH level, organic matter content, and nutrient deficiencies or excesses. By understanding these factors, we are able to tailor our fertilization and irrigation programs to meet the specific needs of different areas within the course. This targeted approach prevents over-application or even unnecessary applications of fertilizers and reduces the risk of nutrient leaching, which can harm the environment and waste resources.  It is important to understand some of these numbers early in the winter, because the corrective measures for soil pH, for example, take several months to take affect.  By applying those materials now, the soil will be better balanced come next season.
