Aerating our Recently Sodded Tees

This afternoon we aerated our newly sodded tees on holes #2, #13, #16 and #17.  Using 5/8” hollow tines, it’s important for us to work to remove the sod layer that can be an issue from the day the sod is laid.  Seeding will always be the preferred way to establish Bentgrass on a sand based root zone. This is because the turf roots immediately into the sand as opposed to introducing an organic layer that naturally comes with sod. This layer can inhibit water movement.  The main benefit is sod leads to a playing surface that can be put into play much faster, compared to seeding, which can take as long as 3 months before it can be put into play. However, the sodded surface will require extensive aeration with hollow tine cores in order to achieve the firmness that seeding provides.
