Another beautiful day and week in store for us in Highlands. To be as warm as it is, this early, is far from normal. In fact, I worry what this might mean for the summer. The average high temperatures this time of year are in the 50's, not the 70's. There have been many years where we haven't even mowed any grass yet by this time of year because it wasn't growing yet.
I've talked recently about a new seeder we purchased in order to help us introduce new bentgrass species into our fairways. This morning, we got it out on number one fairway and calibrated the machine to drop the precise amount of bentgrass seed per area. In our case, the rate is very low at 0.60 lbs. seed/ 1000ft2. If you were seeding a brand new golf green, the rate would be up around 2 - 2.5 lbs. seed/ 1000ft2. While this sounds like a very low number, bentgrass seed is extremely tiny and it takes a lot of seed to make up 2 lbs. I think this machine will serve us well and really make a difference over time.
This machine will also be valuable when it comes to inner-seeding our roughs as well.
The process leaves little to no disruption, as you can see.
