Bunker Raking

My survey questions have been quite successful lately so I'm trying a new one that involves bunker raking.  Our bunker raking method has been to use a traditional metal leaf rake, which does a nice job "fluffing" up the sand as well as creating a nice look on the golf course.  However,  fluffy sand may not be everyone's preference for a bunker lie.  While I recognize bunkers are a hazard, they still need to be relatively consistent (this is a challenge itself for many reasons).  In a business where we are always striving for perfection, we are constantly tweaking our maintenance programs that may make us more efficient or help us maintain the golf course in a way that is more appreciated by the membership.  In addition to that, we also want to keep up with industry trends to be sure we exceed your expectations in every way possible.  That is our ultimate goal.

A metal leaf rake is currently used to rake HCC bunkers daily.

All that said, we tried a new method of preparing bunkers for the day which involves rolling sand, rather than raking sand.  We do use a plate compactor periodically to firm up the sand.  However, using a 3-foot wide "roller-squeegee," I did an experiment on the fairway bunker of the 1st hole.  Rolling the sand manually does remove footprints and creates a much firmer surface to play from.  Traditionally, mid to higher handicappers seem to prefer firmer sand bunkers.  The thought is that they are easier to play from compared to softer sand lies.  While "fried egg lies" are very rare with the angular bunker sand we have in our bunkers, this would also help eliminate those that do occur.

As an experiment, a manual roller was used to prep the sand on #1 fwy bunker this morning.

Above is the end result.  You have probably seen golf courses use this method on bunker faces with steep flashes of sand.  I'm taking that philosophy and applying it to the whole bunker.

I'm really curious what you think of this and what you think of our bunkers in general!  The only way I can perfect my craft is to hear constructive criticism from you!  Once again, my idea of perfection, is providing you with a golf course that is conditioned in such a way that you want to play everyday and are proud to show it off to family and guests.
