Brooming and Mowing Approaches

With old bentgrass varieties on our tees and approaches, they have the tendency to get ‘grainy.’ This means they lay over in one direction. One of the worse areas for this tends to be the 6 foot transition from the approach to green.  This is because this area isn’t cut in as many directions as the rest of the approach. To help with this, we are physically push brooming the turf to stand it up...then mowing it side to side in the afternoon while it is dry.  We are going to commit to this practice as routinely as possible given the workload we balance with the staff level we have. While I’d love to do this weekly, it may turn out to be something we can do on a 2-4 week interval.
