Lake Treatments

Today marked the first lake treatment of the season.  Aquatic weeds can always be an issue in any pond, but Club Lake is particularly challenging because it is so shallow, allowing sunlight to penetrate to the bottom.  This leads to more weed growth and thus the need for regular treatments.  It's critical we treat frequently because if the problem got out of hand, worse things could happen.  When too many weeds are targeted at one time, the fish population is indirectly affected.  Dying weeds consume dissolved oxygen from the water- the same oxygen that is critically important to our trout population.  If too many weeds die at one time, this can severely harm the fish- even causing large fish kills.  Personally, I am a NC certified applicator in aquatics and take this responsibility very serious.  The health of our lake will affect Lake Sequoyah, the Town of Highlands drinking water source.
