Today the golf course was extremely wet. So much so to the point it was unacceptable. Let me start by apologizing for the wet conditions. What started as an experiment in changing up irrigation practices to water heavier, less frequently, turned into a soggy golf experience. Living in a temperate rain forest, it is imperative to take advantage of times like this and allow the course to play firm and fast. Let's face it, drought periods on this mountain don't come often. We are constantly striving to meet the balance of green turf and firm conditions. Trust me when I say that is a difficult balance because often times lush turf and ideal playing conditions are at opposite ends of the spectrum. We have an array of golfers at HCC, some who wouldn't mind brown areas in order to keep the course hard and firm. Other members are more of the visual type who feel brown turf is a negative. The low humidity and sun skies this past week create an environment where both the turf and the soil looses water quickly. We try to set up the course in the morning to give the surfaces just enough water to make it through the day without wilting. The cloudy skies today didn't allow for the rapid evapotranspiration like the past week. In short, we recognize the problem and the golf course will be back to the condition you expect in the very near future.
