If you haven't done so, check out the USGA website and click the link to the green section and course care. There is a lot of great information on this site!
We are fortunate to have 2 excellent mechanics at HCC led by equipment tech, Paul Dalton. This video taken at last year's US Open shows what occurs on a daily basis at HCC. 7 days a week, the height of cut and sharpness is checked and adjusted as needed. Mowing reels are sharpened using a reel grinder approximately every 3 weeks. There are other methods Paul uses to keep reels and bedknives sharp. We mow our greens at .120". To keep turf healthy at that height, it is extremely important the quality of cut is perfect. If the reel is dull, it could result in pulling or tearing of the grass which creates another stressful condition on a plant that is already stressed enough. On top of this, they are also responsible for engine maintenance and repair. The broad range of knowledge required by these individuals make finding a good technician no easy task.
