#12 creek
I have been asked about the creek on #12 and why we allow the sticks/leaf debris to remain. As you may remember, we are working with a University of Missouri graduate student who is completing his PhD. He has been living at the Highlands Biological Station for the last 5 summers and will continue one last season of salamander research. The sticks and leaves were strategically placed there to create a habitat of the salamanders. If you do not know, the Highlands Plateau has more species of salamanders than any area in the world due to our high amount of rainfall. In fact, we also have more species of molds, mildews and ferns as well.
