In the Northeast US, it's going to be a long season for many golf courses. Now that turf is really waking up from winter in all areas of the country, it appears the Poa annua took a beating in the northeastern states. Fortunately, we have a mild enough climate in Western NC where winterkill isn't much of an issue. In colder climates, particularly where Poa annua may spend a lot of time under ice cover, winterkill is a huge issue. When the Poa annua doesn't recover, superintendents are forced to inner-seed bentgrass into the large voids left by the dead grass. This carries into summer, and takes a majority of the season just to reestablish turf coverage. Winterkill is not an issue with creeping bentgrass, which is far more cold tolerant than Poa annua.
