This maple tree, behind the entrance column, has been trending downhill for a number of years. The tree is about 18 years old and it is more than likely root bound, according to our arborist. He claims this is very common for red maples post-planting. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot that can be done about this once it occurs. For the last couple of years, we've been 'verti-mulching' this tree's root zone to try to stimulate some growth. Today, we verti-mulched the root zone on 2-ft centers to try to get more oxygen to the root system. Using this 3" auger, holes were drilled in the soil about 18" deep. The holes will remain unfilled for now, to allow for that gas exchange. Eventually, we'll fill the holes with a mix of organic amendments.
