Drought Update

In parts of Macon County, specifically Franklin, air quality is reaching unhealthy to dangerous levels. The visibility is less than 1 mile in many areas due to smoke from the 10,000 acres of wildfires burning in Western NC. Fortunately, the closest fire to Highlands near Cliffside Recreation Area, is 95% contained with damage to 101 acres according to the US Forest Service. According to a news source, it's been 75 days since we've had any rain.

There is no rain forecasted in the 10 day forecast, making for another long stretch of drought. The low humidity and breezes continue to encourage these wildfires.
