Friday Notes

Above is an artificial light system that hovers over Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI.  Penn State Turf and Soil Science Professor, Andy McNitt, PhD, oversees the field management for the NFL.

In the case of golf courses like Augusta National, research (and personal experience working there) show artificial lighting strung across a green does little benefit for the grass.  A light bulb can't produce the intensity of light required for turf growth that the sun provides.

Above, this is the 3rd green at 10:00 AM.  The only light reaching the green is a small sliver of filtered sunlight. This also is not valuable and essentially the same as being fully shaded like #2.  We are being very caution on these greens by skipping the clean up lap and picking up on areas that don't see enough sun.

On another note, we do have a load of sod being delivered next Wednesday and that will finish the areas we stripped like #12 and #6 etc.
