If you were to ask what's the most challenging aspect of my job, I would say managing turf in extreme shade. Here are 3 photos of examples of extreme shade. There are many more areas also impacted by shade at HCC. Think of it like this: You are a marathon runner and you expect to keep your body in perfect shape and condition to run a marathon at any given time. The catch is, you have to eat all of your meals in afternoon, squeezed into a 3 hour period. Would it possible? The sun is the neccesary catalyst for turf to make its own food. No sun, no food. In a perfect world, all plants are most photosynthetically active in the morning, meaning this is when they are most productive. These pictures were taken at 9:00am. These greens won't see the sun untill 11am-12 noon.
