Fairway Verticutting

Fairway verticutting started this afternoon.  This cultural practice removes thatch and organic matter in addition to helping eliminate grain.  Grain occurs when turf grows in a certain direction.  On putting greens, grain isn't typically an issue because we as superintendents are mowing so low (under 1/8").  This machine uses 30 table saw-like blades to cut grooves 1/4" wide and 1" deep.  Once this is complete and the debris is cleaned up, we will sand topdress the fairways.  This channel is a perfect void for the sand to settle in.  Over time, this program helps firm the surface, increases turf density, and smooths the surface.
