We worked at the back of the range today by installing drainage in a few areas. The newly graded area will grassed to tie into the existing body of the range. I met with golf professionals Ken and Tommy on site last week. It is rewarding to see their excitement about this improvement.
I barrowed this deep tine machine from my fellow super at Highlands Falls CC. This machine penetrates the surface about 6" leaving a small slit. Deep tine aerification is important for a number of reasons on USGA spec greens. One, it promotes deeper rooting. Second, it fractures the compaction layer that is created after years of aerifying with 4" hollow tines. It is important to have an aerification program that addresses various levels in the sand or soil profile. The down force of an aerifier will create a compacted layer 4" beneath the surface, where the tines stop.
