Now that the fairways are cleaned off, it is time to start slinging sand! For the last 13 years, we have been on a consistent topdressing program on fairways. The benefits are obvious. On some fairways, we have built up a nice sand cap on top of the native soil. On #1 fairway, we had to raise irrigation heads as much as 4" to level them to the new fairway elevation. The benefits of sand topdressing are too numerous to mention but include such things as firmer surfaces, smoothing the surface and better drainage. Over time, the rate at which we topdress decreases since we essentially "recycle" the sand during the aerification process. When cores are pulled, we allow them to dry and then drag the fairways with a mat that breaks up the material allowing the sand to fall back into the canopy.
