US OPEN

Contrary to what Johnny Miller says on US Open commentary, grain is non existent. When we mow greens at .125" and lower, the leaf blade is cut so short, it does not have a chance to lay over. Pre 1980's when greens turf was mowed at .250", yes, the turf did lay over. Furthermore, grass does not grow towards water as he claims! If you recall he made numerous comments about turf growing towards Lake Merced. Do you really think the turf on our 5th greens knows where Lake Sequoya is? Johnny Miller will never let anyone forget about his 1963 US Open victory at Oakmont when he shot 63 in the final round, setting the US Open low round record. What he fails to mention is that it rained 3" the night before and that softened everything up. Contrary to his opinion, rain will also slow green speed. The excess moisture causes leaf tissue to swell, the thatch layer to swell resulting in more friction and slower greens. According to him, the rain "pelts" the grass down causing faster speeds. Needless to say, being a superintendent and listening to Johnny Miller is frustrating knowing the average golfer hears this and trusts in this info. It goes back to the quote..."as golf handicap decreases, your IQ apparently increases." Don't believe it!
