Just about every night, a red fox will play in the bunkers on a couple holes, usually #3 or #4 at Highlands CC. We are not alone in this, however. Nearly ever golf course I've worked at has had the same issue. The fox will dig holes around the edge of the bunker, where the sand meet the native soil edge, like you see above. They never dig in the center of a bunker...again, always along the edge. Its always been a mystery to me as to what they are after... is it food? A new den? Once they hit the Better Billy Bunker gravel layer, they come to an abrupt stop, fortunately. They do very little harm or damage and a rake will usually make quick work of the repair.
