I had dinner with this man on Wednesday evening at the Dunes Club. Palmer Maples is a legend of sorts with quite a story. His father and uncles personally knew Donald Ross and were the ones who headed up Ross' work in the Carolina's. Specifically, Palmer's Uncle, Frank Maples, may have been Ross' foreman when Highlands CC was constructed in the late 20's, according to Palmer. Unfortunately there is no record of that anywhere. I first met Palmer 20 years ago on the 13th green at Augusta National when I was a college student at Penn State. He was at the 2000 Masters taking moisture readings on the greens. We had a great conversation and I am fortunate to have gotten to know him better over the last 5 years. Palmer left his Pinehurst home years ago to be a Superintendent at a variety of courses and now lives outside of Kansas City on the Missouri side.
