For the next several days, we’ll continue to have high skies and warm afternoons. The turf is loving this sunshine but it does make maintaining green turf slightly challenging. When we get into extended periods of rain and cloudy weather, the root system of the turf becomes shortened and compromised. When the constant rain turns off and the sun comes out, the turf will wilt quickly and dry spots emerge primarily on slopes. This is because the turf became too accustomed to the standing water. The deeper roots that sustain grasses through droughts, rot. It then becomes a delicate balance of keeping everything green but playing surfaces firm and fast. You’ll see us dragging a lot of hoses in the coming days as we try to maintain firm conditions.
