In 2011 I got the wild idea to start a blog about the Highlands CC golf course. The main goal was to give the Greenkeeping and Landscape Departments a voice. With most everything we do being behind the scenes, this platform would keep members up to date and also allow us to promote the many things we do that go unseen everyday. Most of the initial people (associated with the club) I spoke to about this thought it might be a good idea with a few exceptions. One person said, I needed to be very careful what I posted and that it couldn’t be controversial stuff. Of course, that was a no brainer as agronomic practices don’t exactly stimulate controversy. I also heard from numerous people; “Brian, I think it’s a noble idea but if you are going to be successful with this, you have to consistently post regularly and I’m not sure if anyone can do that and maintain the job you have.” Well, those folks clearly didn’t know who they were talking to. Here we are, 8 years later, and I am writing my 5,006th post since that first blog post in 2011. In 2017, Golf Course Industry magazine named the HCC Agronomy blog, Best Industry Blog, worldwide. That was a great honor. It is used as an example blog template in numerous professional publications annually. This blog receives about 3,600 hits each month, or 120 hits per day. Since 2011, it’s received just shy of 400,000 page views. We average 626 posts per year- almost 2 posts per day. That alone shows you how current the information is. I look forward to continuing this tradition well into the future. I’m proud of the way this started and how it’s evolved over the years to make it user friendly and include such features as weather data that’s updated daily.
If you have any ideas on how to improve the blog or make it more interesting to the membership, I would love to hear those ideas. I love when I talk to a member and they reference something that I know they saw on my blog. Again, this is a tool for me to reach the Club Membership and if you have any thoughts or ideas to make it more interesting, I’d love to hear it! I would love to know what topics you enjoy reading about as well as what topics you want to know more about...
