Wednesday

As we get later into the year, we are losing the benefit we received for the first half of the season in terms of increased morning sun on the 2nd green. This photo was taken at 8:30 AM and you can see we are essentially still in the dark.  Starting in August, we will be much less aggressive with the maintenance of our greens, particularly numbers 1, 2, 8, 15 and 16.  Being too aggressive with maintenance practices to achieve fast green speeds can result in thinning and other damage to the putting greens because the turf can't grow enough to overcome the stress.  Once again, light is the limiting factor from allowing your greens to reach their potential.

To continue from above, you can help us by scattering your foot traffic on our greens.  On #2 and #16 (the most severe because there is one way on and off the green), you'll notice these signs that were added recently.  I dislike signs more than anyone but in this case, it brings awareness to the issue.  You can see on these two greens, we've plugged a few small areas that can't withstand the constant foot traffic and even worse, those who drag their feet with spikes on.  We've even eliminated (for the time being) mowing any kind of clean up pass around the outer edge of the green this week.  Greens mowers and grooming reels can be very abrasive.  When operating the mowing equipment in a straight line, little damage is done.  However, when the clean up lap is mowed, it involves following the contour of the green edge.  This slight turning can really exacerbate the wear and tear on the outer edge.  In fact, we will most likely switch to a mower with a slightly higher height of cut, a solid roller and no groomers to mow these clean up passes.

Just a reminder, the putting greens will be vented with 1/4" tines on Tuesday, July 30th!  This is minimally invasive and within 3 days, all evidence will have disappeared.  Please keep this in mind if you plan to entertain guests at the Club next week.  Your patience is much appreciated.  After the constant rain, our root system is anxiously awaiting some fresh air!

Our Zinnia and Dahlia Garden located between the parking lot and the Fairway Villas is spectacular!  Madison is doing a great job of deadheading flowers and keeping this area looking good!  Staking this flowers is an incredible task because they grow so quickly, outgrowing the previous stake.  If you haven't seen this, it's definitely photo worthy!
