Shade


Above and Below, you can see the challenges these 2 greens face.  This pictures are taken at 9:30am.  These greens need light on them at 8:00am at the latest.

Above, note how the root system is compromised in the shade compared to that growing in sun.


I personally love this graphic.  Each plank represents something that can affect turf quality.  Imagine filling this barrel with water.  If light is a limiting factor, it doesn't matter about the other things.  The turf can only be as good as the amount of sunlight it receives.  There is no replacement.


Finally, this is the amount of sunlight that is required for bentgrass greens throughout different times of the year.  Please note that we have greens that don't even get 2 hours of sunlight in an entire day!
