Turf Disease Issues at the Piggly Wiggly...

Being a golf course superintendent, it's a difficult job to "turn off" when I'm away from the Club. For example, this afternoon, I was drawn to these Type II fairy ring patches (there are a total of 3 types of fairy ring) at the Piggy Wiggly grocery store in Dillard GA.

First off, this has to be one of the last Piggly Wiggly's left in the South. I thought they went out of business years ago. Regardless, Fairy Ring is caused by a fungus in the soil.

In this case, type 2 is relatively harmless and the fungus leads to this pattern of nitrogen release, creating a darker green circle of turf. Type 1 will kill the turf in this pattern and finally, Type 3 fairy ring typically has mushrooms mixed throughout the turf in addition to the dark green grass in a circular pattern.  In all cases, the soil often becomes hydrophobic and repels water.  This leads to other issues that can be stubborn to treat.

UPDATE:  I'm told by a source close to the situation that Piggly Wiggly is alive and well in the Birmingham, AL area.
