The quality of soil beneath a golf course can make all the difference the quality of turf. At HCC, we are blessed with great soil, although it some cases, it holds a little too much water due to the healthy organic matter in it. Regardless, above is a picture I saw on social media from another course. The particle size distribution of this soil is literally like that of concrete. It's interesting to see that anything is growing in it. This particular soil appears to have the same characteristics of red clay, that is found in a lot of areas of Georgia. It's great for building an earthen dam but very poor agronomically. There is only so much you can do to modify a soil, particularly after turf is established.
