In 1995, Highlands CC embarked on a Master Plan using Donald Ross expert, Ron Pritchard to guide the Club. I was looking through some older documents today and came across these drawings done by Prichard in the 1990's.
Ron is incredibly artistic and talented and sketched every green along with the new shape of the green overlaid on top of the current green at the time. This drawing is of the 4th. Over time, golf greens have the tendency to become very rounded as you can see due to mowers and other maintenance practices. Those rounded greens weren't anything like the original green Ross designed if you compare them to the Ross drawing we are fortunate to have. There is also a phenomenon known as 'green creep,' where greens or other features even move overtime. If a mower scalps ever so slightly into a collar and it occurs over a 50 year period, for example...this can equate to a substantial shift in the location of the green...to the point the golf hole plays differently than the architect intended. These documents are great stuff and if you ever have interest in looking at this material, you are welcome to see it.
