Today, we are making a second verticutting round. You can see the tiny blades that penetrate the ground approximately 1/8" deep. This stands the turf up and slightly thins it out, creating a putting surface that is smoother and faster. Our walking greens mowers are also equipped with 'groomers' which do the same thing on a daily basis but on a much smaller scale. If green speed was needed quickly, verticutting followed by a light sand topdressing is the most effective way to achieve those conditions, in my experience. Anything we do to reduce friction on a golf ball will make for faster greens.
