It is that time of year when Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) are emerging from overwintering locations and moving onto turf, in search of food. April is active scouting time for adults. That's what I am doing in this photo; using soapy water, I work it into the turf canopy and see if any emerge. The soapy water irritates them and if they are present, they will scatter from the soapy water. If enough emerge, I would pull the trigger on an adulticide control measure. Fortunately, I didn't see any. This area of #1 fairway has been a hot spot in years past. This is the responsible way to address insects. It would be easy to simply apply an insecticide without any evidence of their presence.
April is typically the first generation and July is the 2nd generation. Some areas of the US experience more than two generations but I have yet to experience that at HCC.
