Springtime starts the battle of broadleaf weeds. Summer annuals begin to germinate and the most effect means of controlling them is post emergent herbicides. Annual grassy weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass, on the other hand, are best controlled by the use of pre-emergent herbicides.
Above: With the irrigation system primed up and fully operational, we are watering all of our hydroseed areas as much as we can to get the most germination possible in the next 2 weeks. The reason for this, is our spring fertilizer application will be applied to the golf course on Monday, April 24th. This fertilizer contains a pre-emergent chemical to prevent crabgrass germination. This chemical creates a barrier in the soil that will prevent any seed from germinating. It will not discriminate! Finally, (below) we are tied up spreading mulch around Club buildings as well as pine straw on the course. I'm anxious for this to be completed because it takes a lot of people and takes a long time. When complete, it frees up the staff to focus on details. We have much to do before the golf course is in top shape.
