These are some great photos of Oakmont. In 1973, after the US Open, a tree planting program started. You can see the small plantings on 1,9 and 10. The second photo shows how much they grew in just 10 years- by 1983.

Above, the 16th hole. Golf course conditioning has come a very long way! This was excellent for the time. I love seeing older Augusta photos from the 60's and 70's where the fairways were littered with tiny piles of grass clippings. That would obviously not be acceptable to today's standard.
Of course today, you can see clear across the PA Turnpike that runs through the middle of the golf course. Below, the 7th hole that required the golfer to hit from a narrow lane of trees.
Above, standing next to the Church Pew bunkers looking towards the clubhouse. When I worked and lived at Oakmont in the late 1990's you couldn't see to the 8th green, let alone the Clubhouse! In the 90's we were still working on phase 1, about to start phase 2 tree removal. Below, is the 6th hole, a par 3. All of the trees shown are no longer standing.
