Dry Weather

The 70% chance of much needed rain today didn't come to fruition, of course.  We are spraying all the roughs with a grub control product on a preventative basis.  Since grubs (beetle larval stage) live in the soil and feed on turfgrass roots, the product needs to be irrigated to wash the pesticide into the soil.  Therefore, I always like to time the application with rain.  Since it didn't rain, we will be irrigating heavily tonight for 18 minutes per station which will deliver just under 1/4" of water to the turf.  While this will go unnoticed by most, it may seem slightly soggy in a few areas tomorrow.  We pride ourselves in the driest conditions but sometimes the water is critical to more than irrigating grass.  In this case, it targets the pesticide to the proper location in the soil.  An average HCC water cycle uses about 225,000 gallons of water from Swan Lake.  Tonight, I am pumping to the tune of 353,000 gallons.
