Tree trimming

I did a good bit of pruning on the 8th and 9th holes today. We raised a few lower branches of spruce trees on the 9th to make finding golf balls easier. Pin oak limbs were pruned to allow mowers to get under the tree without causing harm to the operator. Below, dogwoods were rimmed out of necessity. Trimming limbs also benefits the tree because you are removing the non essential limbs which allows a given amount of nutrients be distributed to much less of the tree.  Essentially, there is less to feed and more energy to conserve.

Kousa Dogwoods are a great hardy tree that gives nice white color in early summer.  The base of the tree needs to be thinning of sucker growth to keep the pretty tree form. Otherwise, it begins to look like a shrub in additional to sprawling out horizontally.
