Frost Damage

On my morning walk, I came across this on the 10th fairway.  What is it?  A bear and her cub crossed the 10th fairway when it was frosty.  When a grass plant (or any plant) freezes, each individual cell of the plant is froze solid.  When a golfer walks on the turf (or a bear in this case), the grass plant breaks in half and cells rupture causing the black appearance.  In order for this to heal, new shoots must emerge from the crown of the plant which will take weeks.  This is precisely why we have frost delays on golf courses.  Think of the amount of damage that would be done by a foursome on a single green!  Every step that each golfer takes would essentially die!
