New Greens on #12/#14

New greens always require more fertilizer than established greens.  This is because new turf has yet to develop an organic layer that holds on to valuable nutrients.  Because of this, we are applying more foliar nutrients at small doses to the new greens.  All greens are sprayed every Thursday with a fungicide/nutrient package.  In addition to that, we are treating the new greens another time- either Monday or Tuesday- in addition to the Thursday spray.  This will help the greens mature through the summer.  The constant rain has been challenging.  It's not only making it difficult keeping up with mowing, but also is encouraging moss and algae to develop on these new greens.  This tank also contained a product to help control moss.

One thing I am not happy about in terms of the new greens, is some of the sod edges.  However, we are working to plug those areas.  I want to brag about our Equipment Tech, Matthew Green, for a minute.  In this business, there are times you need a tool (like a long thin plugger in this case) that you just cannot buy.  However, Matthew has the creativity and welding experience to build our own tool.  A week ago, I told him at 8:00AM what I was looking for, and by 1PM, using scrap steel and old bedknives from our greens mowers, he had the prototype built!  After some minor tweaks, it's been put to use!  This is one example of how valuable he is. A day never goes by that I am not appreciative to have him on our team!
