This past week, following the 8" rain event we had last weekend, we're mowing fairways differently then the striping we traditionally do. This form of mowing is what is know as "half and half" or "light and dark." The fairway mowers go the length of the fairway and then come back the opposite way. So rather than stripes, you end up the fairway being half dark green and then half light green. These colors are the result of how light reflects off the leaf blades that get pushed over by the fairway mowers. This mowing pattern is ideal in wet weather because it eliminates the excessive turning in the rough that is required to mow stripes. This turning can damage turf when it is very wet. Therefore, we'll keep mowing this light and dark pattern until it finally dries out. Right now, Saturday and Sunday both look like potential washouts.
