Golf Course Staffing Levels in UK vs. US

This is an interesting graphic showing average staffing levels of golf courses in the UK and Europe. Compare that to American courses, where the average staff size is probably around 15. This is largely due to higher expectations from golfers in America as well as golf course architecture in the States, which usually requires more manual labor due to elaborate bunker faces, slopes etc. As a Grade 2 Greenkeeper on the Old Course in 1999, we had a staff of 8.  However, the entire golf course could be maintained using riding mowing equipment, which drastically reduces the need for a large staff.  Even greens and tees were mowed with triplexes, meaning one person can do what would otherwise require 3 or 4.  At Highlands CC specifically, a staff of 18 is required at a minimum, in order to keep up with the 85 acres of maintained turf that comprises the Highlands CC golf course.
