This is what a putting green cross section should look like! You can see the white sand- that’s sand that’s been introduced into the root zone in the last 2 years by our various forms of aerification. This white, clean sand has plenty of large open pore spaces that are idea for roots and water mo0vement. Failure to aerate greens enough results in clogged pore spaces...that means soft, wet and slow putting greens that will ultimately fail. When a USGA green fails because water can't move down the profile, the only option is to shut the course down and rebuild the greens....a project that takes 6 months at best! Next time you putt on greens like ours in the springtime that were just aerified, remember that the disruption is only temporary, and better than the alternative mentioned above!
