Above, behind the 1st green, we removed some of the vegetation and replaced it with turf. These small details are being done to continue to preserve the Classic Donald Ross design and feel of Highlands CC
Looking at the shovel, you can see how much we are having to lower the ground level behind #16 green.
On #16, we had a situation known as a collar dam, that developed over the past 20 years. This is where topdressing sand accumulates around the edges, building the surrounding area up higher than the green, which ends up trapping water. This, in conjunction with low light intensity and foot traffic, caused the annual decline of the collar on the back of the green. In order to fix this, the sod is being removed, the ground lowered and then the sod will be replaced. This is a delicate operation but it will allow this collar to make it through the season without severe thinning in autumn, which has been a perennial challenge.
