Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW)

The week prior to the 4th of July usually marks the beginning of the 2nd generation of Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) in our climate.  This is why you may see us performing soap flushes on fairways and putting green collars.  The objective is to monitor the populations to determine if treatment is warranted.  Today's soap flush on #1 fairway yielded 2 weevils per square foot; no near enough to pull the trigger on an insecticide application.  We've been fortunate in the Highlands area in that we have dealt with very little of this pest.  My good friend and Superintendent at Cullasaja Club, Tom Nelson, has dealt with his fair share of ABW.  He has always been kind enough to alert me when he starts seeing minimal damage or high enough populations numbers on their golf course.  For whatever reason, Cullasaja Club seems to be a little bit ahead of us on the calendar when these guys start feeding on Poa annua leaf blades.
