This afternoon, a prominent member of "The Strikers" sent me a newsletter that contained this piece about croquet lawn speed. I found this somewhat interesting and wanted to have some perspective. So what did I do??...
I built my very own croquet stimpmeter using rare, treated pine lumber from Reeve's Hardware. Since we only have one lawn with grass on it, my options were limited. So I went to the new lawn, that has 3 week old bentgrass on it, mowed at 0.140". I rolled 3 croquet balls from 12" high and took the average, just like is done with a golf stimpmeter. Since the lawn is completely level, there was no need to go two directions. At the recommended height on that lawn, the ball rolled 12' 6" from the base of my stimpmeter.
Stay tuned as I test this formula more in the coming week. I don't know if I am in agreement with the calculation presented at the bottom of the verbiage above. It will be easy to test how accurate it is comparing the mass of golf ball vs. that of a croquet ball.
Both lawns 3/4 and 5/6 are stripped of their sod and were laser leveled today. At 7:00AM tomorrow morning, 2 tractor trailer loads of bentgrass will be arriving from New Jersey; a Penn A1/A4 blend, developed at Penn State University. The surrounding lawns are also being prepped for Kentucky Bluegrass installation, that will start tomorrow and finish on Tuesday, when 2 more trailer loads will be delivered. By the end of next week, all the heavy lifting of these projects will be complete! While I love being involved in projects, it's rewarding seeing them come to a close.
